
The AP Top 25 college football rankings are set for a shake-up after a wild weekend. Four top-10 teams lost, including No. 2 Miami, which fell to unranked Louisville on Friday. By Saturday night, No. 5 Ole Miss, No. 7 Texas Tech, and No. 10 LSU had also lost. Nine ranked teams lost overall, with four falling to unranked opponents. No. 17 Vanderbilt, No. 12 Georgia Tech, and No. 3 Indiana are expected to rise in the rankings. Meanwhile, Louisville and Tulane are knocking on the door for their first rankings of the season.
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Gunner Stockton passed for 289 yards and four touchdowns, including three to tight end Lawson Luckie, and No. 9 Georgia overcame Trinidad Chambliss and No. 5 Mississippi’s powerful offense to rally for a 43-35 win over the Rebels. Georgia rallied after trailing 35-26 at the start of the fourth quarter. Stockton’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Luckie with 7:29 remaining gave Georgia a 40-35 lead. Ole Miss was denied its first road win over a top 10 team under coach Lane Kiffin even though the Rebels scored touchdowns on their first five possessions. Stockton added a 22-yard scoring run.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Raleek Brown bulled in for a 1-yard touchdown with 34 seconds left and Arizona State rallied after blowing a 12-point fourth-quarter lead to hand No. 7 Texas Tech its first loss of the season, 26-22. The Red Raiders labored most of the afternoon without starting quarterback Behren Morton (knee), finishing with 276 total yards after averaging an FBS-best 558.8 through the first six games. Will Hammond showed his mettle after failing to move Texas Tech’s offense through three quarters, orchestrating two late scoring drives. The freshman scored on a 1-yard run and, after Texas Tech’s defense held, found Reggie Virgil on a 12-yard touchdown pass. Arizona State answered behind Sam Leavitt, who it 5 of 7 passes for 61 yards to set up Brown's TD run.
TORONTO (AP) — The Seattle Mariners are on the brink of their first American League pennant, just one win away after a 6-2 victory against Toronto. Pitcher Logan Gilbert, who played a key role in the playoffs, is set to start Game 6 on Sunday. Toronto will counter with rookie Trey Yesavage, a rookie who has made just five big league starts. The winner of the best-of-seven series will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series starting Friday. Toronto hopes designated hitter George Springer will be available. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Lionel Messi scored his second career MLS hat trick nearly a year after his first in Inter Miami’s 5-2 win over Nashville SC. The last time Messi scored a hat trick was Oct. 19, 2024, in Inter Miami’s 6-2 win over the New England Revolution. He scored his first of the game from the top of the box in the 35th minute to give Inter Miami a 1-0 lead. Messi was awarded a penalty kick in the 63rd minute and scored to tie the game 2-2. He completed the hat trick in the 81st minute, scoring from the center of the box on a left-footed shot.
BOSTON (AP) — Five athletes are becoming the first from South Africa to compete in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston as part of a crew comprised of all people of color. The event is part of a multinational effort to expand access to one of the most exclusive, elite sports. In recent years, diversity initiatives have expanded in rowing. The first all-Black women’s 8+ from the U.S. competed at the Charles in 2022. Lwazi-Tsebo Zwane, a 23—year-old from Germiston, South Africa, said he and his boatmates feel very aware of the fact that they are role models for younger rowers.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Zabien Brown returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the first half and No. 6 Alabama rolled to a 37-20 victory over No. 11 Tennessee in the rivalry known as the “Third Saturday in October.” Brown’s pick gave the Tide a 23-7 lead and was all Alabama’s defense needed while turning in its best performance of the season. The Tide held the nation’s highest-scoring offense to just 410 yards. Joey Aguilar completed 26 of 41 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown for the Vols. DeSean Bishop ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
PROVO, Utah (AP) — Bear Bachmeier had 229 yards of offense while throwing for a touchdown and running for another score to rally No. 15 BYU to a 24-21 victory over No. 23 Utah on Saturday night. LJ Martin added 122 yards on the ground to help the Cougars (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) remain unbeaten and beat their Holy War rivals for a third straight time. Devon Dampier threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns for Utah (5-2, 2-2). Daniel Bray added a career-high 121 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. The Utes surrendered 14 straight points after taking their first lead less than a minute into the fourth quarter.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Julian Sayin connected with Carnell Tate for two of his four touchdown passes, and No. 1 Ohio State rolled to a 34-0 victory over Wisconsin. Ohio State has won their first seven games this season by an average margin of 30.6 points. Wisconsin has dropped five straight and has suffered back-to-back shutout losses for the first time since 1977. Sayin passed to Tate for a 33-yard touchdown on Ohio State’s first drive and a 10-yard score with four seconds left in the opening period. Both touchdowns came in third-down situations.
ANGERS, France (AP) — Ilia Malinin has showed just how far ahead of his figure skating rivals he is in the run-up to the Winter Olympics. He says he still has a “lot more” room to improve. The world champion from the United States swept to victory at the opening Grand Prix of the season by an almost-unheard of 40-point margin. Malinin scored 321, Adam Siao Him Fa was second on 280.95 and Nika Egadze of Georgia was a distant third on 259.41. France’s Olympic ice dance champion Guillaume Cizeron and his new partner Laurence Fournier Beaudry won their first Grand Prix competition together.
