In October 2019, the City of Great Bend was awarded funding through the Kansas Department of Transportation Cost Share program for the demolition and reconstruction of the SRCA Dragstrip at the fairgrounds.
Receiving seven bids for the project, Suchy Construction of Great Bend was awarded the bid for $1,601,206.
Joel Kroschell with EBH Engineers says Aaron Suchy has worked with SRCA
in this endeavor and is familiar with the needs and requirements of the
project.
"It is a special concrete mix that the NHRA said they wanted," said Kroschell. "We will be testing for that and the flatness will have to be tested."
Profilograph testing will need to be performed to measure the surface’s
flatness. It is not part of this bid and the city expects the cost to be less
than $2,000.
Great Bend’s project was one of 22 selected in KDOT’s first phase of the Cost
Share Program. Great Bend’s application also includes the resurfacing of most
of 10th Street or US 56.
KDOT pays 75% of construction costs while Great Bend covers the other 25% and all of the engineering expense.
