Through a collaboration with Barton County and Sunflower Diversified Services, recycling is even easier for students at Barton Community College.

This school year, the college added two recycling trailers located in the parking lot between the dormitories.

Patrick Bush, working under the college’s student services department, noted students can throw cardboard, plastic bottles and aluminum into the trailers.

"I would notice a lot of stuff that was being thrown away," said Bush. "It kind of bothered me. I felt like I needed to do something. There were definitely a lot of pizza boxes and Amazon delivery boxes that were constantly being thrown away. I definitely feel we can get a lot of cardboard."

Each of the trailers cost approximately $7,000. Barton County assisted the college in obtaining a grant to fund the initiative.

Sunflower’s Recycling Director Shawn Bates said college representatives will bring the full trailers to Sunflower’s recycling center in Great Bend to be emptied.

"Starting with the younger generation, it's just going to help the landfill," said Bates. "The collaboration was awesome. Barton County helped us get the grant, and the college is helping us keep stuff out of the landfill."

Through a separate grant, the college was able to place individual recycling trash cans inside the dorm rooms.
