The Barton Community College women's soccer team earned its first shutout of the season Sunday afternoon, netting two first half goals and adding another after the break to secure a 3-0 victory over Dodge City Community College at Memorial Stadium.
Winners of three straight, the Cougars improve to 2-2-0 in conference play and 4-3-0 overall, while the Conquistadors drop to 1-2-0 in league action and 3-2-0 on the season. Barton will have a short turnaround Wednesday with another stiff test on the road, facing conference leading No. 8 Cowley College in a 5:00 p.m. kickoff at Arkansas City.
Freshman Saki Takaki broke the deadlock in the ninth minute, bending a perfectly struck free kick from 25 plus yards out that tucked just under the crossbar for her first collegiate goal.
Barton doubled the margin midway through the half as Ayaka Nagano's far side delivery into the box was flicked on by Maelle Harnisch, setting up Katie Potter to missile home her third goal of the season with 17:29 left in the stanza.
The Cougars closed out the scoring in the 68th minute, when Sara Aguirre showed sharp individual skill, using a self-pass to create space before unleashing a right footed strike into the far upper-90 for her team leading fifth goal of the year.
Defensively, Barton's backline held firm while the goalkeeper tandem of Leonie Chambe and Kimberly Escobedo combined to keep the Conquistadors off the board, securing the Cougars' first clean sheet of the season.
