Most Kansas counties lost residents over the past 10
years as the state’s population concentrated in more populous places, new
census figures released last
Thursday showed. Figures showed Barton County’s population dropped
7.9% over the 10 years.
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s once-a-decade count of the nation’s
population showed that 80 of the state’s 105 counties declined in population
since 2010.
The census reported Barton County’s population at 27,674 in 2010. That number
was reduced by 2,181 when the 2020 number showed 25,493.
Stafford County’s population declined 8.2%, Russell County slipped 4%, Rush
County fell 10.6% and Pawnee County declined 10.3%.
Census figures also showed that Kansas grew more diverse, with Hispanic or
Latino residents increasing to 13% of the population, up from 10.5% a decade
ago.
