Great Bend's Umphres shows off power, speed at home of MLB's Rangers

The 17th Annual World Power Showcase Home Run Derby and All-American/World Classic was held in Texas at the Globe Life Field - Home to the Texas Rangers - Nov. 24-26. The event features the most prolific amateur players from around the country/world and provides the perfect center-stage opportunity to demonstrate their skill sets in front of baseball’s top evaluators.

Center fielder Carson Umphres from Great Bend was named to the 17th Annual World Power Showcase All-American/World Team. Each player exemplifies tremendous character, next-level arm talent, power, coach/scout references, and recent school/summer performances. Umphres proudly represented his home state of Kansas during the prestigious All-American Classic Game, which featured top amateur pitching and power-hitting prospects in the world. He had the opportunity to further demonstrate his skills while playing during the game.

The game highlighted the three-day, All-encompassing major league experience. The event included an MLB Scout Day in front of 30 organizations, the prestigious welcome dinner/ jersey presentation ceremony, the renowned home run derby itself, and participation in the All-American/World Classic game.

The Home Run derby had 19 participants in the 2025 class and consisted of 20 outs - five outs using a wood bat and 15 outs using a metal bat. Exit velocity and distance were measured during each hit and recorded on the scoreboard. Umphres was able to hit three home runs during the derby. He also led the field with a 107 mph wood-bat exit velocity and finished second in the class at 113 mph while using metal on a 470-foot ball over the foul pole into the upper deck. Other home run distances were 430 and 405 feet. The longest ball hit by another participant was 481 feet.

Umphres played center field during the game and went 1-3 with a single, RBI and scored a run. During the MLB Scout Day, Umphres threw 90 mph from the outfield and ran a 6.65 sec 60-yard dash. There were players from Japan, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Canada and all over the U.S.
