The Great Bend Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is into its final weeks. Library staff reminds the public of some important upcoming dates, especially for young readers in the children’s reading program for those in the fifth grade and younger.

“All reading minutes will need to be turned in by the July 17 to receive prizes and for their minutes to count towards our Unearth a Party goal,” said Library Outreach Manager Hannah Glass. “Teens and adults are a bit different. They will still need to turn in minutes by July 17 to count towards our Unearth a party goal, but as far as earning prizes and library loot goes, they will have until the July 31 to turn in minutes.”

The big summer reading wrap party is planned for July 24. If all readers in the program turn in a combined 500,000 minutes by July 17, those readers will “unearth” a special party.

“Regardless if we meet our goal or not, we will be having a party on the July 24 to wrap up summer, but it will be on a smaller scale,” Glass said. “We will still have activities and refreshments, and this will be when we have our prize drawing for children who attended events this summer. We have not met our goal yet, and are frankly not that close, so we really need people to read, read, read or turn in their minutes they have already done.”

The library’s new History Book Club meets this Saturday, July 17, again at 10:30 a.m., to discuss “1776” by David McCullough. This Saturday also marks the deadline for teens who want an afternoon of fun to sign up for our final Tabletop Teens Summer One-Shot, which takes place the following Saturday, July 24. This one-and-done fantasy adventure is open to D&D beginners and veterans alike.

The library will also have a Dino Documentary series as part of this summer's Wonder-Filled Wednesdays, starting up. They will be watching Steven Spielberg's latest documentary about the rise and fall of dinosaurs at 10:30 a.m. on July 22, July 29, and Aug. 5.
