From the Chamber
For more than four decades, the Central Kansas Association for the Visually Impaired (CKAVI) has helped individuals experiencing blindness or vision loss recognize their abilities, find support and live fuller, more independent lives. Today, the nonprofit organization is building on that history by working to reach more people throughout Central Kansas and expand the educational resources and opportunities available to them.
CKAVI was founded on September 22, 1985, by Sister Camillus Bayer and Sister Corona Bayer at the Great Bend Convent. Recognizing a need for greater support and assistance for people who were blind or visually impaired, the sisters helped establish an organization where individuals and families could find encouragement, practical resources and a sense of community.
That founding purpose continues to guide CKAVI. The organization welcomes individuals with all levels of vision loss, from mild visual impairment to blindness, and provides a supportive environment where members can share experiences, learn from one another and access helpful information.
CKAVI also encourages sighted individuals to become involved and support its mission. By bringing together people with different experiences and abilities, the organization works to increase understanding of vision loss while reminding participants that visual impairment does not define what a person can accomplish.
The organization’s continued service and plans for expanded outreach strengthen the network of resources available to individuals and families across the region. Access to peer support, education and encouragement can help people navigate changing circumstances while remaining engaged and connected within their communities.
CKAVI’s work aligns with the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce’s Elevate GBK Beyond Today strategic plan through its emphasis on supporting people, strengthening community connections and improving quality of life throughout Central Kansas. Organizations that help residents overcome barriers and remain active in their communities contribute to a stronger, more welcoming region.
The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce recently joined CKAVI for a ribbon cutting recognizing the organization’s longstanding service and its continued commitment to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The celebration brought community members together to highlight CKAVI’s history and raise awareness of the support it provides.
CKAVI meets at 1 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month at 1614 Main Street in Great Bend. Participants should enter through the south doors next to Farmers Bank and Trust. Community donations help CKAVI provide support, education and resources while extending its reach to more Central Kansas residents. Checks may be made payable to CKAVI and mailed in care of Scharna Doll, treasurer, at 2001 E. Sunset Street, Goddard, KS 67052.
