Freshman Brandon Lloyd broke a five year old program record Saturday highlighting the 3rd ranked Barton Community College men's track and field team results over the weekend in Norman at the John Jacobs Invitational hosted by the University of Oklahoma.
In addition to Lloyd's historic achievement, the Cougars won three of the events and had eight other personal best performances including adding another national qualifier bringing Barton's list to twenty overall.
Lloyd competed in both the shot put and hammer on Friday but in Saturday afternoon's discus throw the third attempt was the charm on an event winning 58.61m mark to surpass Ricky Nelson's 2017 record of 58.15m. Going into the meet Lloyd was in the third slot of the program list, eclipsing his personal best by over six feet and eighteen inches further than Nelson's best. Fellow national qualifier Giovanni Gutierrez also set a personal best in reaching 48.91m to place 8th.
Zander Von Stade became the fifth Cougar to reach national standards in the 200m, clocking a best 21.20 in placing 11th overall. Five teammates also competed in the Saturday event, Canadian U20 national record holder Almond Small leading the entries with a 5th place 20.80 clocking, Marcus Purcell placing 17th on a person best 21.44 time, and already nationally qualified Telron Bradford Jr. finishing 19th on a 21.57 time. Andrew Ferguson's 21.77 placed 23rd as Xavier Madden rounded out the entries with a 23.06 clocking for 35th.
The nationally qualified jumping duo of Shakwon Coke and Anthony Woods had solid outings including Coke's long jump winning splash in the sand of 7.97m for a season best while Woods placed third at 7.20m. On Saturday the pair finished 6th and 7th overall of 14.45m and 14.28m marks respectively.
Barton's other first place came in the 110m hurdles as Daylin Williams reset his personal best to a 14.04 time.
Elijah Mosley's bid for the 400m came up short to a University of Oklahoma junior but the freshmen set a new 46.21 best time to currently rank third nationally.
Gutierrez also had an event runner-up placing, finishing second in the shot put at 17.97m with Lloyd in 5th at 16.41. The pair, who are each qualified in three events, also competed in the hammer throw with Gutierrez' 12th place 44.65m beating out Lloyd's personal best 42.69m for 16th.
