Promoting smart, efficient and safe multimodal transportation choices is the goal of the third annual Kansas Mobility Week, Nov. 5-11, as has been proclaimed by Governor Laura Kelly. People are urged to try different modes of travel as communities across Kansas host local events to promote various transportation opportunities such as transit, bikeshare and walking.
“Mobility Week is an opportunity for Kansans to explore different ways of getting around town and to see the health and community benefits that come with those choices,” said Governor Kelly. “I encourage my fellow Kansans to walk, bike or use their local public transit options to promote sustainable transportation.”
Counties, cities and transportation agencies currently have nearly 60 local events in 37 counties planned as part of Mobility Week to highlight transit, bikeshare and walking. Events include free rides to polling places and local destinations, walking or running events and transportation displays.
Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed said multimodal transportation options are critical to enable many Kansans to get where they need to be. He encourages everyone to make a commitment to try new travel modes during Mobility Week and throughout the next year.
“An estimated 350,000 driving age Kansans do not currently have a driver’s license,” said Secretary Reed. “I’m proud the IKE transportation program supports transportation choices that enhance the quality of life for all Kansans, whether they drive or not.”
Kansas Mobility Week will again feature a “Selfie Challenge.” Participants can take a photo of themselves using a transit system during Mobility Week, then post the photo to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #KansasRides2023. Six winners will be chosen at random and receive $25 gift cards.
