After record crowds came to Al Burns Field this summer to watch Great Bend Bat Cat baseball, a promising summer is ending with frustration.

The Bat Cats, who had their entire four game series with the Wichita Lobo's canceled after the Lobo's forfeited, were dealt another blow over the weekend as Liberal pulled out of Tuesday's game in Great Bend. The contest was to be the final game of the regular season and a way for fans to celebrate what has been a great season.

Great Bend elected not to play in the Sunflower Collegiate League Tournament in the Wichita area this weekend. Manager Roger Ward had hoped to play at least a couple of games at home in that tournament but the six teams, Hutchinson, Newton, Cheney, Kingman, Haysville and Derby elected to have all the games played in the Wichita area.

The Bat Cats regular season ends with a record of 30-11 overall and a third place finish in the SCL at 26-10. The Cats were 21-2 at home.

There will be two informal scrimmages on Saturday and Sunday July 30 and 31 at 7pm. Fans attending will be treated to free food, beverages and giveaways.

The Bat Cats will not play in the NBC World Series this season, instead electing to play in the Summerball Showdown in Goddard Aug. 3-7 at the fully turfed Genisis Sports Complex.
