Barton Nursing students Cecelia Barnard and Olivia Herrman were honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students at the Nurse Pinning Ceremonies as part of Barton’s graduation celebrations.

The prestigious international award, created by The DAISY Foundation, recognizes nursing students who demonstrate exceptional compassion and care to patients and their families.

Barton Director of Nursing Renae Skelton said both students were very deserving of the award.

“During her time at Barton, Cecelia exhibited strong leadership qualities by taking initiative, supporting classmates, and setting a positive example in clinical and classroom settings,” she said.

“Olivia’s nomination outlined her kindness and holistic approach to providing care to patients and their families,” she said. “She has shown tremendous growth this year.”

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students was established to celebrate students who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to care and inspire others to provide the best clinical skills possible. Honorees receive a student award certificate, a DAISY Award honoree pin, and a hand-carved Healer’s Touch stone sculpture. These students also benefit from reduced tuition and grants for medical missions.

The DAISY Foundation was created in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died of complications of the autoimmune disease idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses inspired them to establish the award to thank nurses everywhere.
