Not all public health events are a success. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has been one of the popular ones. The Barton County Sheriff's Office and Barton County Health Department are again collaborating for the popular event on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sheriff Brian Bellendir said the event is very user-friendly.
"Even if you can't get in and out of the car, we've got people there and we'll come," he said. "We've got it down to a science between us and the health department now that you can just roll up there. We'll reach in the window and take it and toss it for you and we'll secure it. It goes to Wichita that week, and from there I think it goes to St. Louis where it's incinerated."
The location will again be the east side of the courthouse near Kansas and Lakin Avenue. Bellendir said it is not unusual to collect 800 or 900 pounds of medications at each event, and the county hosts two of the events each year. Prescription Drug Take Back Day offers a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of prescription drugs while also educating the public about the potential for abuse of medications.
