Last winter and spring, Great Bend city crews installed cages that were placed at the bottom of Veterans Lake to protect underwater vegetation that was planted. Great Bend officials are hoping an improved habitat will enhance fish growth and breeding, making fishing better at the lake.

Public Lands Director Scott Keeler said Vets Lake was restocked with fish last Monday.

"We had 475 trout delivered to Vets Lake," said Keeler. "They're ranging between 12 and 16 inches with a few larger ones. The next stocking is scheduled right after the first of the year. The final one will be at the end of February or first of March."

A battle with blue-green algae years ago and past flooding at Veterans Lake has caused an aquatic desert for the fish population. The cages, built out of PVC pipe, are intended to keep turtles and grass carp out of the vegetation.
