From the city of Hoisington
The city of Hoisington is working on a water system maintenance plan that will include flushing fire hydrants. Flushing hydrants is critical to extend the life of the system and keep residents safe. Flushing hydrants allows staff to test the flow and reliability of fire hydrants while also purging sediment, mineral deposits and biofilm that naturally accumulate over time in water mains.
While the system is being flushed, residents may notice discolored water. Residents can run cold water until it resolves. Please use caution when washing white laundry during this time to avoid staining. When flushing occurs, the water is still safe to drink. Flushing does not create health risks for residents. Flushing is intended to prevent bigger problems. Regular system maintenance will keep water fresh, improve taste and appearance while ensuring hydrants work properly for fire protection. While flushing may create some short-term inconvenience, it is intended to produce long-term gains for the community’s water infrastructure.
When flushing is taking place, residents will likely notice water spraying into the streets and stormwater systems. The city’s staff will be placing a diffuser or hose on hydrants prior to opening valves to try and mitigate excessive erosion or private property impacts. Please do not walk or drive too close to flowing hydrant water. While it may appear harmless, it can cause injury or property damage.
The city of Hoisington’s field staff intends to begin flushing the water distribution system beginning in August. The system has been split into 11 sections with the hope of flushing one section per week. These 11 phases should begin in the first full week of August. This preliminary schedule is being put out in an effort to keep the community informed but it may vary or change due to weather or other variables.

The proposed schedule is as follows:
Phase 1- August 3-7
Phase 2- August 10-14
Phase 3- August 17-21
Phase 4- August 24-28
Phase 5- August 31-September 4
Phase 6- September 7-11
Phase 7- September 14-18
Phase 8- September 21-25
Phase 9- September 28-October 2
Phase 10- October 5-9
Phase 11- October 12-16
