From Smoky Hills PBS
Smoky Hills PBS invites viewers to discover a fascinating chapter of Kansas history with the broadcast of Minersville on Saturday, June 20, at 7 p.m. The award-winning documentary is also available to stream now on Smoky Hills PBS Passport.
Minersville explores the spirit, history, and lasting impact of a lignite coal-mining community that once thrived in North Central Kansas. Located between Belleville and Concordia, the town was active from the 1870s through the early 1900s and was home to nearly 500 residents and 28 coal mines during its peak.
“This documentary is a wonderful example of the local storytelling that public television makes possible,” said Amanda Smith, Director of Marketing for Smoky Hills PBS. “Minersville uncovers a unique and often overlooked part of Kansas history, allowing viewers to connect with the people and communities that helped build our great state of Kansas.”
