Great Bend Post
The celebration was on last Friday at Heizer Park in Great Bend. The overhaul at the park includes new mini-pitch soccer courts, a restroom facility, and new security cameras that have already paid dividends. Friday, the Kiwanis Club, Great Bend City Council, and other city staff members met at the location to recognize Kiwanis' $30,000 shade structure donation to the improvements.
The shade structure is similar to the one at the Veterans Park splash pad with dimensions of 20x30 feet. It features a different color scheme, the Kiwanis Club logo, and Kiwanis Pavilion lettering.

The Musco mini-pitch soccer courts and new netting behind the goals have already seen plenty of action. The 55x80 yard field recently hosted a tournament with teams from as far away as Salina and Wichita.
Basketball courts, sand volleyball, a picnic facility, and playground are also offered at Heizer Park. Great Bend was awarded grant funds from the Land & Water Conservation Fund through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) in the amount of $161,260, with matching funds from the city for a total of $361,260 to make improvements at the park.
