The Great Bend Recreation Commission (GBRC) has announced two major improvements aimed at enhancing recreational opportunities and comfort for residents.
A new outdoor basketball court will soon be constructed at Eisenhower School, offering a modern and accessible space for the community to enjoy. The court will feature a full playing surface, professional-grade hoops, court striping, and surrounding benches with shade. Construction is expected to be completed in the coming months, and the court will be open daily to the public.

“This project is all about community,” said Chris Umphres, GBRC Director. “We’re proud to offer a space where families, youth, and athletes can gather, play, and grow. The partnerships in any project like this really add value to our community, and I am excited that these partners trust GBRC to oversee this one.”
The court is made possible through support from the GBRC Foundation, USD 428, the Kiwanis Club, and generous community donations. The GBRC Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3), is still accepting contributions to support the project. A formal grand opening ceremony will be held, during which project partners will be recognized.
In addition to the basketball court, GBRC board members have approved the installation of destratification fans in the City Auditorium. These fans help mix warm air near the ceiling with cooler air at the floor level, improving temperature consistency and reducing energy costs.
“The City Auditorium is a gathering place for many activities and this upgrade will enhance the experience for everyone that uses the facility,” said Umphres. “Air movement is needed in these large spaces just to reduce stagnant air. This update is a step to maintain and modernize public facilities across Great Bend.”
Both projects are part of GBRC’s broader mission to improve recreational infrastructure and promote healthy, active lifestyles throughout the community.
