The left knee of Minnesota guard Anthony Edwards remained structurally intact when he was injured during Game 4 of his team’s Western Conference first-round playoff series, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Edwards has a bone bruise and also hyperextended the knee, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced details or a specific return-to-play timeline. Edwards was hurt in the first half of Minnesota’s 112-96 win over the Denver Nuggets, a victory that gave the Timberwolves a 3-1 lead in that series.
LONDON (AP) — Sabastian Sawe of Kenya has become the first person to break the fabled 2-hour barrier in the marathon in a huge moment in sports history. Sawe smashed the men’s world record by 65 seconds in winning the London Marathon in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds. The second-place finisher, Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia, also dipped under 2 hours by crossing the line in 1:59:41 in his first-ever marathon. Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda broke the previous world-record time, set by Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum in Chicago in 2023, by seven seconds in finishing in 2:00:28.
The Colorado Avalanche have a chance to close out the Los Angeles Kings in Game 4 of their NHL playoff series on Sunday night. The Kings do have experience coming back from a 3-0 deficit. They rallied to beat the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the 2014 postseason — and then went on to capture the Stanley Cup. In other Games 4 on Sunday night, the Bruins host the Sabres, the Canadiens host the Lightning and the Ducks host the Oilers.
BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have fired manager Alex Cora, who led them to the 2018 World Series championship. He will be replaced on an interim basis by Chad Tracy, who had been managing the club's Triple-A Worcester affiliate. The team made the announcement Saturday after a 17-1 victory in Baltimore that snapped a four-game losing streak — including a three-game sweep at Fenway Park by the archrival New York Yankees. The organization said it is also parting ways with five members of the coaching staff: hitting coach Peter Fatse, third base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, and major league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — University of Buffalo linebacker Red Murdock is this year's “Mr. Irrelevant.” He was the final pick of the NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. Murdock expressed gratitude after being selected 257th on Saturday. The Broncos also picked Utah tight end Dallen Bentley just before Murdock. Denver became the only team to hold the last two picks since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Broncos coach Sean Payton praised Murdock's instincts and tackling skills. Both players will attend the traditional celebration for the final draft pick.
Injuries continue leaving a big mark on the NBA playoffs. Minnesota’s Donte DiVincenzo tore his Achilles tendon on Saturday night, which not only ends his season but calls his 2026-27 season into question. He joins Boston’s Jayson Tatum, Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton and then-Milwaukee’s, now-Portland’s Damian Lillard on the list of prominent players to tear Achilles tendons during playoff games in the last year or so.
SHANGHAI (AP) — Bernd Wiesberger is finally a winner again on the European tour. The Austrian played bogey-free and shot 67 to rally past Adrian Otaegui of Spain and win the China Open. It's his first victory since Denmark in 2021 when Wiesberger qualified for his only Ryder Cup team at Whistling Straits. He then left for LIV Golf for two years until returning to the European tour. Otaegui had a three-shot lead on the back nine until bogeys on both par 3s. He needed birdie on the par-5 18th to force a playoff but drove into a bush and made double bogey.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Donte DiVincenzo's season ends with an Achilles tendon injury, while Anthony Edwards' knee injury remains unclear. Minnesota coach Chris Finch shared the news Saturday night after the Timberwolves' playoff win over the Denver Nuggets. DiVincenzo was injured 1:19 into Game 4, suggesting an Achilles issue. Edwards was hurt late in the first half. Despite losing their starting guards, the Timberwolves, led by Ayu Dosunmu's 43 points, beat the Nuggets for a 3-1 lead in their series. Finch expressed devastation for DiVincenzo, and Dosunmu dedicated the win to both injured players.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ayo Dosunmu scored a career-high 43 points, stepping up after leg injuries to Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo with the highest-scoring playoff performance by a reserve in 50 years, and the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Denver Nuggets 112-96 on Saturday night. The Timberwolves took a 3-1 lead in the series in a game that ended with ejections of Nikola Jokic and Julius Randle after Jokic became angry when Jaden McDaniels made a meaningless layup with 2.1 seconds remaining and confronted the Wolves swingman near his bench.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Paolo Banchero and Desmond Bane each scored 25 points, and the Orlando Magic blew a 17-point fourth-quarter lead before rallying to beat the Detroit Pistons 113-105 for a 2-1 lead in their Eastern Conference first-round series. Banchero added 12 rebounds and nine assists for the Magic. Franz Wagner scored 17 points for Orlando, which got 15 from Jalen Suggs and 14-point from Wendell Carter Jr. Cade Cunningham scored 27 for Detroit, which trailed 96-79 with 8:34 left and then outscored the Magic 26-8 over the next six minutes to grab the lead. But the Pistons were outscored 9-0 the rest of the way.
