Great Bend's Cheyenne/Quivira Ducks Unlimited Chapter recently held its annual youth hunt at Crosby Wild Game Adventures. District Chair Jerry Ney said a dozen young hunters age 12-16 participated in this year's event with support from their parents and mentors.
"We did a European-style shoot," Ney said. "We had a good turnout and a good success rate. The kids all got to take home about five birds apiece."
This year's youth hunt was sponsored by Cheyenne/Quivira Ducks Unlimited, Devin McMillen, and Wally Eldridge. Beyond the sport of hunting, Ney said the youth hunts serve a larger purpose.
"This is very important," he said. "This keeps the younger generation interested in hunting and conservation."
Cheyenne/Quivira Chapter 007 hosts the second-largest Ducks Unlimited fundraiser in the state each year. Only the Overland Park chapter raises more money that the Great Bend chapter.
