Hoisington volleyball is a lot like the school’s football program; one of the most consistent winners in the state. But, they’re still seeking that elusive state title.
The Cardinals have finished in the top 5 two years in a row, and will be leaning on that experience. Senior and Illinois commit Sofia Simic said that experience is leading to a team that’s more confident, and ready to compete.
"I think it helps to only be more confident. When you have upperclassmen who have been there before, and know the mentality that needs to be had, it really helps the younger classmates. We can just create a good atmosphere that's still ready to compete, but not nervous. We want to keep a solid, steady mind.
"We're just really good at having fun this year. I think we've had so much fun... I think honestly we're just out there having fun and that shows in our play, because we're kind of care free and it just works."
Head coach of the Cardinals Mykela Bartz gives credit to the senior leadership on the squad for setting a good example.
"These seniors are great. They play together well, they show the confidence to our underclassmen. They just help us get that good mindset here early in the season. I'm sure I help them some with this but a lot of it comes from them. Just having the experience and showing it to the rest of the team. They set our goals for the season, they set our motto for the season (Pressure is a Privilege), they set what we want practice to look like every single day. That's really awesome to see as a coach, that, yeah I helped them from their freshman year on, but now they're taking over, and they're really showing that confidence and mindset."
Hoisington is 8-0 on the season and hosts Haven and St. John Tuesday, September 8th in their next match.
