From United Way of Central Kansas

United Way of Central Kansas is proud to announce the recipients of its 2024 Impact Grants, supporting a diverse range of programs that empower individuals, strengthen families, and build thriving communities across the region. UWCK Executive Director Charell Owings said these grants will directly impact the lives of local residents, addressing critical needs and fostering opportunities for growth and success.

"We started the Impact Grants in 2023," she said, "so this is our second year of distributing these funds for smaller projects that are going on in the community that just need a little bit of start-up money, or just need a little bit more to get them over the finish line of where they need to be to able to go forward with their project."

Grants were awarded to:

Kansas Children’s Service League:
Empowering Families Through a Parent Advisory Council Funding has been awarded to the Kansas Children’s Service League (KCSL) to establish a Parent Advisory Council, consisting of seven parents currently served by the program. Trained staff will support the council, which will meet quarterly to provide input on program decisions such as family nights, parent support groups, and improving visitation rates. Members will also build leadership skills, fostering stronger families and communities.

Barton County Academy:
Overcoming Transportation Barriers Recognizing transportation as a critical barrier to student success, UWCK has awarded funds to Barton County Academy to support students from Hoisington and Barton Hills. By partnering with Catch a Ride, the academy aims to provide reliable transportation Monday through Thursday on school days, ensuring students can attend classes and achieve their educational goals.

Catholic Charities of Southwest Kansas:
Supporting Rapid Rehousing Efforts UWCK funding will assist Catholic Charities of Southwest Kansas in providing essential resources, such as beds and household supplies, to clients in its Rapid Rehousing program. These resources play a vital role in helping individuals and families transition to self-sufficiency and stable housing.

Ellinwood Heritage Senior Center:
Enhancing Safety and Comfort The Ellinwood Heritage Senior Center will use UWCK funds to update its seating, improving safety and comfort for seniors who rely on the center for meals, companionship, and social engagement.

First United Methodist Church:
Feeding Barton County Residents UWCK’s support will help First United Methodist Church continue its vital work of distributing food boxes to residents in need throughout Barton County, ensuring no one in the community goes hungry.

A Commitment to Community Impact
“Our 2024 Impact Grants embody the spirit of collaboration and hope that defines United Way of Central Kansas,” said Owings. “These programs address needs in our community, from supporting families and students to enhancing services for seniors and ensuring access to basic necessities. Together, we’re creating pathways for a brighter, stronger future.”
