32 students were inducted into the Great Bend High School National Honor Society last month. The Honor Society recognizes the students' achievements in the classroom and beyond.
The organization is open to students who will be juniors or seniors in the next school year. English teacher Kayci Teghtmeyer is the group's faculty sponsor. She explained what students must do to be considered for the honor.
"They have to have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.8,” Teghtmeyer said. “If they meet that grade point requirement, they receive an invitation to apply. If they complete an application, and it’s a fairly thorough application process, they have to write an essay and just talk about their involvement in community leadership and any type of volunteer service that they do.”
Teghtmeyer added that the students cannot have any unexcused absences or disciplinary action in their files. She described the rest of the selection process.
“Those applications all go to a faculty council of five teachers who are selected at random. They’re different teachers every year. Those teachers on the faculty council review all of the applications, and then we meet, and they’re the ones who recommend students for membership.”
After they are chosen, the students must complete 15 hours of community service and maintain the standards they achieved before being selected.
