Barton County took a step at Tuesday’s meeting to assist former employees that retire with the county. The Barton County Commission approved the adoption of a resolution that extends coverage for healthcare benefits to retired employees and their dependents.
County Administrator Matt Patzner said the extension is offered to retirees after a written application is filed with the Clerk within 30 days following retirement of the employee.
"We have elected to charge 125% of the cost to the county for this program," said Patzner. "It's similar to COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act), but it's a little more specific to retired former employees. It's required by statute."
Patzner said the employee must have been working for the county for at least 10 years prior to retiring to be eligible for the extended healthcare benefits. The coverage stays in place until the retiree becomes eligible for Medicare.
