With the snowfall late Monday night and throughout early Tuesday, the Great Bend Public Works department knew what time it was. It was time to clear the streets. Public Works Director Jason Cauley said the street brined roads in advance and were out clearing snow at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The City of Great Bend has tried a new approach on two heavily-trafficked streets, Broadway Avenue and 24th Street. Cauley said asking citizens not to park on portions of these streets has gone well.

"With this current storm, with the wind coming out of the north, it's causing some drifting," said Cauley. "I think the no parking is definitely helping. It's making it easier for our guys to get in there and do what they need to do. I appreciate it. It takes a little more effort from our citizens to not park in those areas, but it's making a difference for our equipment operators to get through there."

Great Bend is attempting to minimize the number of driveways getting blocked due to snow removal efforts.

City crews made one complete passage around the city for snow removal and Cauley said staff will begin a second passage Wednesday at 5 a.m. to help remove some of the drifting.
