(AP) — Jackson Koivun won the 3M Open by three strokes in only his third start as a professional by holding off Scottie Scheffler with a closing 5-under 66 for a tournament-record 25-under 259 total. Koivun went bogey-free for the second straight day after a 61 on Saturday gave him a three-shot cushion. The 21-year-old player led Auburn to the NCAA championship last month. Scheffler surged into contention with a 63 while playing five groups ahead of Koivun. The world's top-ranked player had his fifth runner-up finish this season. His lone win this year came at The American Express in California.
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Puerto Rico and Curaçao may be small islands, but the support they showed was massive as elite center fielders Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday. Both joined slugging second baseman Jeff Kent as the newest members before an estimated crowd of 12,000 fans at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown, with 57 other Hall of Famers on stage, creating the largest gathering of current Hall of Famers. Jones’ speech was almost like a love letter to his home country of Curaçao. Chants of “Puerto Rico” broke out before Beltrán even uttered a word. And whenever he mentioned his home island, the crowd cheered for him and waved flags.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Quarterback Jacoby Brissett and the Arizona Cardinals agreed to a reworked one-year deal Sunday and coach Mike LaFleur confirmed that the veteran is the team’s likely starter for Week 1. Brissett was unhappy with his previous contract, which included just $1.5 million of guaranteed money for the upcoming season. His new deal is worth a reported $15.5 million. Brissett was the team’s starter for the final 12 games last year after Kyler Murray suffered a season-ending foot injury. He did well individually with 3,366 yards passing, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions, but the Cardinals had just a 1-11 record in those games.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams’ first practice of training camp Sunday was also the first time they’ve lined up as a full defense with Myles Garrett on the edge. The experience left everybody on the field excited about what could be possible this season for the Rams. Garrett is still in the process of getting settled in with his new team less than two months after his arrival from Cleveland. But even with the Rams going less than full speed in shorts and no pads, Garrett’s presence was unmissable whether he was breaking into the backfield for a simulated sack or leaping up to swat down a screen pass.
PARIS (AP) — Tadej Pogacar confirms his status as one of cycling’s all-time greats after winning a record-equaling fifth Tour de France title in emphatic style. Daring mountain attacks, multiple stage wins and an ice-cool temperament all helped the 27-year-old Slovenian seal victory on Sunday to join Belgian Eddy Merckx, Spaniard Miguel Indurain and Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault as the only riders to win five Tours. After Sunday’s 21st and final stage in Paris, Pogacar finished 6 minutes, 26 seconds ahead of Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel. Pogacar’s UAE Team Emirates XRG teammate Isaac Del Toro was third. Pogacar hinted he could compete in the upcoming Spanish Vuelta, a race he has not won.
CHICAGO (AP) — Caitlin Clark had a memorable weekend that started with meeting former President Barack Obama and ended with a stellar effort in her first traditional All-Star Game. In between were sponsor events with Nike, State Farm and Wilson that had hundreds of fans of all ages and genders — many wearing her No. 22 jersey — lined up for hours, hoping to get a high-five, autograph or even just a glimpse of the Indiana Fever star.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski dismisses the notion that a pitcher can enter a zone in which his powers mystically reach a supreme level. But there must be something to explain the way he dominated hitters Sunday afternoon as the Milwaukee Brewers’ flamethrower reached more milestones. Misiorowski struck out 12 of the first 13 batters he faced Sunday in an 11-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies. He set a Brewers franchise record by striking out seven straight hitters to open the game. He also broke his own record for the most 100-mph pitches in a single game since pitch tracking began in 2008.
LeBron James has announced he's joining the Philadelphia 76ers, calling it the “last decision” of his playing career. Back in 2018, businessman Asher Raphael had put up billboards near Cleveland to woo James to Philadelphia. Although James joined the Lakers that year, Raphael's effort now seems prescient. Raphael, co-CEO of Power Home Remodeling, says the news has been thrilling. The original billboards went viral, promoting the 76ers' rebuilding process. Raphael believes James playing alongside Joel Embiid and others will boost the team. Philadelphia hasn't won an NBA championship since 1983.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Coach Kyle Shanahan walked onto the practice field and stood next to general manager John Lynch, watching his San Francisco 49ers practice for about 30 minutes. Shanahan’s presence that has been a constant the past decade was a welcome sight for the first training camp practice, coming less than two weeks after he got into a car crash that left him with a concussion and other injuries. While Shanahan made a cameo appearance at practice, the Niners began preparations for the 2026 season without their leader in charge. Shanahan has ceded responsibility over the team to assistant head coach/offensive line coach Chris Foerster temporarily as he recovers.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Corey Heim passed team co-owner Denny Hamlin on the final restart Sunday then held off the hard-charging cars of Christopher Bell and Joey Logano to capture his first Brickyard 400 crown. The 24-year-old has won twice this season, even though he won’t be driving full-time in NASCAR’s Cup series until next season. He’s the first Cup driver to win twice in his first 15 career starts since A.J. Foyt in 1965. Heim did it this time with a daring outside move to overtake Hamlin, then leading the final 35 laps and holding off Bell by 0.287 seconds on Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s historic 2.5-mile oval. Logano, last week’s winner, finished third, 0.972 seconds behind, again keeping team owner Roger Penske out of victory lane.
