Great Bend Post
Make sure you tune into Eagle Radio’s Pages in Time show each week as
historians recall the history of Great Bend and Barton County.
On this week’s show, Barton County Historical Society Board of Directors member
Justin Engleman went through the history of a few of the founders of Great
Bend. Engleman discussed the Moses and the Townsley families.
Channel Pickering “C.P.” Townsley built a house in 1885 on the southwest
corner of the Broadway and Morphy intersection.
Engleman said this house had the first telephone in Great Bend. Working for the
newspaper, C.P. was always quick to react when a high load of hay traveled
through town and knocked the telephone line down.
"People said as soon as that wire came down, you could see C.P. flying out of the office with a ladder under his arm so he could go up the pole and put the wire back up," said Engleman.
The Pages in Time program airs every Monday at 11:05 a.m. on 1590 KVGB &
95.5 FM with either new or encore episodes.
