There is a lot of fascinating history with the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo. For instance, some of the first animals to arrive to Great Bend’s free zoo were two black bears in 1953. The older of the two bears had been the Montana University football team’s mascot.
Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Christina Hayes said a new promotional idea coming out this year will Zoo Look Books, hardcover books detailing the history of the zoo.
"The look book will have a little history and information to commemorate the zoo," said Hayes. "The book will be something we sell at the zoo, but the CVB is helping to create it. You might have a really great Christmas gift for people this year."
A professional writer was hired and has already started writing news stories for the zoo.
Originally named City Park, the zoo was renamed to Brit Spaugh Park in honor of its founder and former director of public lands.
