KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit a towering homer and Luis Rengifo added a bases-loaded double to break open a close game as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 6-0. Max Stassi also homered in the ninth for the Angels. Jose Suarez scattered three hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win, while the Los Angeles bullpen bounced back from a dismal series opener with a solid performance. Angel Zerpa earned the loss for Kansas City, even though he allowed just one earned run before departing in the fifth inning with a right knee injury.
TORONTO (AP) — George Springer hit his seventh career grand slam, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a two-run drive and the Toronto Blue Jays extended their winning streak to seven by beating the short-handed St. Louis Cardinals 10-3. Alejandro Kirk added his 12th homer and Matt Chapman had two hits, including the tiebreaking single in a five-run sixth as Toronto improved to 8-1 under manager John Schneider. Dylan Carlson hit a solo home run as St. Louis played the first of two games in Canada without unvaccinated sluggers Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have displayed a flair for the dramatic ever since returning from the All-Star break. Luis Urías delivered a game-ending sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to bring home Andrew McCutchen as the Brewers edged the Minnesota Twins 7-6 on Tuesday night. The NL Central-leading Brewers have gone 4-1 since the All-Star break. In three of those wins, they were tied or behind in the eighth inning or later.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren says the conference will be bold and aggressive as college sports goes through a period of sweeping change. He left the door open for more expansion after the league added Southern California and UCLA for the 2024 season. Warren says the future could involve more expansion. He says the Big Ten will be strategic and look for schools that add value to the conference. The Big Ten's big moves came less than a year after Texas and Oklahoma announced plans to leave the Big 12 for the SEC.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes walked onto the practice field at Missouri Western on Sunday flanked by a flotilla of rookies and longshots, many of whom have long dreamed of making in a year what the Chiefs quarterback will make by the end of the day. Yet the reality of the QB market in the NFL is that Mahomes is no longer its highest-paid player, and truth be told, that’s just fine with him. He is perfectly willing to give up that title if it means a better team surrounds him.
UNDATED (AP) — The PGA Tour is keeping two FedEx Cup lists now. The new list omits players who have been suspended for taking part in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series. That's good news for the likes of Rickie Fowler and Jason Day. The new list moved them into the top 125 with two tournaments left in the regular season. AP Golf Writer Doug Ferguson says the two lists are another reminder of the endless disruptions in golf this summer. New LIV signees are generally announced just days after the majors are over. Still to come is whether the tour will suspend any new defectors before the lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs. Currently, a player isn’t suspended until he puts a ball in play at a LIV event.
UNDATED (AP) — Training camps opened across the NFL and the biggest offseason question remains unanswered. The Cleveland Browns still don’t know how many games they’ll be without Deshaun Watson, who is still waiting for retired judge Sue L. Robinson to issue a ruling following his disciplinary hearing that concluded nearly four weeks ago. The league and the NFL Players’ Association requested a decision by the start of training camp, according to a person familiar with the process who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the discussions are private. Robinson, who was jointly appointed by the league and the union, had no obligation to meet that deadline. Representatives are hopeful a decision comes this week.
