Rick and Roxi Connally and Brian and Jan Bontrager announced the acquisition of the former Munchkinz Bakery, located at 112 W. 1st Street in Ellsworth. The newly established business, named The Smoking Barrel, will be managed and operated by Brian and Jan Bontrager.

The Smoking Barrel will offer a curated selection of locally sourced smoked meats, featuring a limited menu of pulled pork, beef brisket and ribs, accompanied by homemade sides. There will also be a signature homemade BBQ sauce and meats smoked using locally-sourced wood. Brian and Jan plan to experiment with seasonal items such as "meat candy" and warming bowls of chili during the colder months.

"We're excited to bring something unique to Ellsworth," said Brian Bontrager. "This venture is our retirement plan, and we're eager to share our passion for smoked meats and homemade recipes with the community. Our initial operation will be on Fridays and Saturdays, but we plan to expand our hours as community demand grows and we transition out of our fulltime jobs."

The Smoking Barrel is expected to open its doors in mid to late fall, contingent upon completion of necessary licensures. The Bontragers are also looking forward to participating in the local Fall Fest, embracing the cultural heritage of Ellsworth with plans of old west-themed decor to enhance the dining experience.

"We can't wait to serve the community and create a space where people can enjoy delicious, smoked meats and a warm, welcoming atmosphere," said Jan Bontrager.
