East takes 51st annual Shrine Bowl 36-25 over West

EMPORIA – The East team ended a six year losing streak to the West by winning the 51st annual Kansas Shrine Bowl game 36-25 at Welch Stadium n Emporia Saturday night.

Clay Center graduate and Washburn University commit Brody Hayes won MVP for the West team. Blue Valley Southwest graduate Dylan Dunn, a BYU commit, won East MVP.

After trailing 3-0 early, the East scored the next 20 points to take a 20-3 lead at halftime. The West closed the gap in the second half to 11 thanks to a 9-yard touchdown pass from Liberal’s Brooks Kappelman to Cheney’s Jackson Voth with 8:25 left in the third to make it 28-17.

The East responded with with 23 seconds left in the third on a 7-yard pass from Blue Valley Southwest’s Dylan Dunn to Eudora’s Adrion Seals. McPherson’s Teegan Haines had a 15-yard touchdown pass from Kappelman with 8:34 left. The East team took a safety in the final minute wrap up the scoring.
