Pawnee County Sheriff Scott King sent out a message to citizens warning them of common scams.
"Over the last several years, scams have been rampant throughout the United States," said King. "Unfortunately, citizens within our community have been victims of varying scams. I want to inform you of some of the common types of scams and how payments are sent to these criminals."
An unknown person will either contact you via telephone, text, email or social media. The person may claim to be a law enforcement officer or have the ability to "take care" of a warrant for your arrest. The person may be claiming to be selling an item at a "too good to be true" price or offering services requiring up-front payment before the services will be completed.
King went on to state, the person may be claiming to be with Social Security, IRS, utilities or Sweepstakes.
As a reminder, do not provide your personal information to someone who contacted you. Never send money to others using online payment systems unless they are your friends or family.
"If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, please contact the Pawnee County Sheriff's Office to make a report," said King.
