Dangerous heat will continue across central Kansas, including the Great Bend area, through Tuesday as the National Weather Service in Wichita has extended heat-related alerts.
An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Sunday, with heat index values expected to reach 112 degrees.
After the warning expires, a Heat Advisory will remain in effect from 9 p.m. Sunday through 8 p.m. Tuesday, with heat index values forecast to climb as high as 108 degrees.
The National Weather Service warns that prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Residents are encouraged to:
- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
- Spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned buildings.
- Avoid prolonged time in direct sunlight.
- Check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and others who may be vulnerable to the heat.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing if spending time outdoors.
- Schedule strenuous outdoor activities during the early morning or evening hours whenever possible.
Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, as interior temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
Those working outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Anyone showing signs of heat illness should be moved to a cooler location immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency—call 911 immediately.
