Less than ideal conditions swept across Garden City's Buffalo Dunes Golf Course over the two-day event as the No. 10 ranked Barton Community College women's golf team opened conference play with a runner-up finish Tuesday at the KJCCC season's first meet.
The 22-participant field battled sustained 15 mph winds in Monday's opening round, with Barton carding a 321 as teams sat within three strokes of one another. Returning Tuesday with winds ramping up over 20 mph and temperatures dropping ten degrees, scores climbed across the entire field as the Cougars posted a 343 to complete the meet at 88-over 664.
Host and No. 15 ranked Garden City Community College used rounds of 319 and 339 to claim the team title at 82-over 658, while No. 17 Dodge City Community College slipped to third at 104-over 680 following rounds of 318 and 362.
The conference foes will meet again Monday, April 13, for the KJCCC's second event hosted by Dodge City at Mariah Hills Golf Course.
Freshman Panalee Prachavittayagon delivered Barton's top finish, climbing four spots on the final day behind back-to-back rounds of 81 to tie for fourth at 18-over 162.
Diana Alvarado led the Cougars after the opening round with a 77 before settling into sixth place overall after an 89, compiling a 22-over 166.
Just one stroke back, Chomchanok Laparojkit finished seventh at 23-over 167 following rounds of 79 and 88, while Suri Rocha Orozco placed in a tie for eighth at 25-over 169 on consistent rounds of 84 and 85.
Alexandria Baxter narrowly missed the top ten, placing 12th at 33-over 177 (84-93), while Kadynce Nash opened strong with an 83 before a 96 to finish tied for 13th at 35-over 179.
Giovanna Tabanag rounded out Barton's scoring lineup in 18th at 40-over 184 (89-95), while Alexandria Hunt stood 14th after an opening-round 85 before withdrawing prior to the final round.
