ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Authorities in Loudoun County, Virginia, have arrested the son of Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy and charged him in the shooting of his mother. Elijah Zion Bieniemy was booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on Monday. Deputies responded to a shooting in Ashburn, Virginia, late Sunday. They found 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy with multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition. The 27-year-old Elijah Bieniemy faces charges including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in a felony. He is being held without bond. The Chiefs have acknowledged the incident, offering thoughts and prayers for the family.
GENEVA (AP) — FIFA President Gianni Infantino has attacked perceived critics one week after the World Cup final for “spreading hate and false rumors” about the tournament. Infantino praises FIFA for “delivering the best show in the world” and spoke of the World Cup bringing “joy and togetherness.” He also rounds on critics in a 900-word statement published in a 15-page post on Instagram and FIFA’s website. The FIFA leader writes “sorry that you were so consumed by hate and criticism that you missed it all.” Infantino has an increasingly testy relationship with media in the 11th year of his presidency
North Carolina football general manager Michael Lombardi has been placed on paid administrative leave. The school announced the move with a statement Monday morning. It didn’t provide details as to the reason, noting that employees and athletes aren’t permitted to address the topic “as is standard procedure with personnel matters.” Lombardi joined Bill Belichick in making the NFL-to-college move when the school hired the former New England Patriots coach in December 2024. Lombardi’s career as an NFL executive had included being the GM of the Cleveland Browns in 2013.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers and LeBron James announced Monday their two-year deal on the veteran's minimum for $8 million total was official and that the four-time NBA MVP was indeed a Sixer. James revealed his choice on Friday, saying it will be his “last decision” and that it came after he strongly considered retirement. James’ resume is beyond compare in NBA history. He’s a 22-time All-Star, a 21-time All-NBA selection and a four-time Most Valuable Player.
MIAMI (AP) — Clayton McCullough breathed a sigh of relief. The Marlins finally won a game. Miami overcame two-run, ninth-inning deficit in the ninth to beat division-rival Philadelphia and snap a 12-game losing streak — the longest such stretch in franchise history. It was the Marlins’ first win since beating Seattle at home on July 9 and ensured they would not suffer their fifth straight sweep. Griffin Conine singled in the winning run against Philadelphia closer Jhoan Duran, who entered in the ninth with a 7-5 lead before loading the bases with no outs.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have put themselves in a good position in the AL West just by having a winning record. At 54-52, Texas is the only team in the division not under .500 with about one-third of the regular season remaining, and now less than a week before next Monday’s trade deadline. The Rangers are the AL West leader by two games ahead of in-state nemesis Houston. They are 2 1/2 games in front of reigning division champion Seattle after taking three of four against the Mariners. Seattle has lost 11 of its last 16 games.
CHICAGO (AP) — New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger will be sidelined for four to six weeks with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. Bellinger was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday, a day after he got hurt running the bases during a 3-1 win at Philadelphia. He had more tests in New York that revealed the extent of the injury. The loss of Bellinger is another major injury for a New York team already playing without reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge, who has been out since May 31 because of a fractured rib. Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton has been sidelined since April 24 because of a strained right calf.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matthew Stafford is back at work in his 18th NFL training camp and his first since winning his first league MVP award. When he looks across the Los Angeles Rams' line at practice this summer, he sees Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie on a defense determined to be as good as the NFL's top offense last season. That's exciting to the 38-year-old Stafford, who is participating in a modified schedule of practices in camp to keep him in top shape for the months ahead. Stafford is coming off arguably the best season of his long career after throwing for 4,707 yards.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Cape Verde has made more World Cup history with Sidny Lopes Cabral winning the public vote for goal of the tournament. Lopes Cabral’s curling shot into the far top corner of Argentina's net was a standout moment in the unheralded African team's stellar World Cup debut. His goal tied defending champion Argentina at 2-2 in extra time of their thrilling round of 32 game in Miami Gardens. Cape Verde eventually lost 3-2. Lopes Cabral’s goal was voted best of the 308 goals scored at the tournament. Eldor Shomurodov’s delicate lob for Uzbekistan against Congo was second and Haiti's Wilson Isidor was third for a rising shot against Morocco.
NEW YORK (AP) — Ann Meyers Drysdale felt nostalgic spending the day with so many other Honda Cup award winners, including fellow UCLA Bruins great Jackie Joyner-Kersee. The award, given annually to the top female college athlete, celebrated its 50th anniversary Monday. Chamique Holdsclaw still fondly remembers meeting the best female college athletes in their respective sports when she won the Honda Cup in 1998 while starring at Tennessee. Out of all the individual sport winners, an overall Athlete of the Year is chosen. In addition to athletic performance, the Honda Cup honors college athletes for their leadership, academics and community service.
