The Great Bend compost site is becoming a more popular location as mowing season has started again. Public Works Director Jason Cauley reminds citizens to not abuse the rules of the compost site so it can continue to serve the community.

The compost is permitted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the city can get written up for items dumped at the site that are not permitted. The city wants to avoid illegal dumping and make sure there is enough room for everyone to access the compost.

"When you get to the site, do the best you can to get all the way back to the grass pile," said Cauley. "Or get to a pile next to it if you can't get all the way back there. Make sure there are not a whole lot of spaces between those. We do have guys that go out and push that up, especially during the work week."

Public Works staff volunteer for the overtime hours on the weekend to compact the material at the compost site.

Great Bend’s permit through KDHE only allows for grass, leaves and tree limbs. Making unlawful deposits at the compost is a Class B violation and can warrant a fine.
