The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement was subject to a successful physical. Bregman can opt out after the 2026 and 2027 seasons to become a free agent again. He might need to shift from third base to second with the Red Sox, who already have All-Star slugger Rafael Devers at the hot corner. A two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion during nine years with Houston, the 30-year-old Bregman is coming off one of his poorest offensive seasons. He hit .260 with 26 homers and 75 RBIs in the final season of a $100 million, five-year contract, also winning his first Gold Glove.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — JT Toppin had a career-high 41 points and 15 rebounds as No. 12 Texas Tech outlasted Arizona State 111-106 in double overtime Wednesday night. Darrion Williams scored 27 for the Red Raiders, making a steal and two free throws with 1:49 left in the second OT to put them ahead to stay. Toppin added a dunk in the final minute off a pass from Williams, whose jumper with 25 seconds remaining in the first overtime made it 96-all. Texas Tech (19-5, 10-3 Big 12) finished with its most points in a Big 12 game. Adam Miller’s 22 points led five players in double figures for Arizona State (12-12, 3-10), which has lost four in a row. BJ Freeman added 21 points, while Amier Ali had 18, Alston Mason 16 and Shawn Phillips 15. Miller’s short floater with 10 seconds left in regulation put the Sun Devils up 90-88, right after he retrieved his own inbounds pass. Ohio State is hiring former Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia as defensive coordinator, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the agreement had not been announced. Ohio State coach Ryan Day, who led the Buckeyes to the national championship, agreed in principle last year to a seven-year contract valued at $12.5 million per year. Day is hiring Patricia to fill the void left by defensive coordinator Jim Knowles leaving for the same job at Penn State. The 50-year-old Patricia, a Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator in New England under Bill Belichick, is getting another chance to coach after the Philadelphia Eagles let him go a year ago. Patricia became the Eagles’ defensive play-caller late in the 2023 season and lost his job after their opening-round playoff loss to Tampa Bay.
TCU basketball player Sedona Prince was involved in a physical altercation last month with a woman she used to date, and both women filed police reports alleging they were assaulted. Prince’s lawyer, A. Boone Almanza, acknowledged that campus police responded to a disturbance on Jan. 18 at Prince’s off-campus residence after a call from the player. Almanza said that no charges have been filed. The Washington Post reported Wednesday other abuse allegations against Prince, including one by a former girlfriend last year that prompted a social media storm and a petition to have Prince removed from the TCU team. The 24-year-old Prince denied all of the allegations made against her through her attorney and said that she has never “abused anyone in her life, whether mentally, emotionally or physically.”
