EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers was knocked out of the game with an Achilles tendon injury just four plays into his debut for the New York Jets, who rallied behind their defense and stunned the Buffalo Bills 22-16 in overtime on when rookie Xavier Gipson returned a punt 65 yards for the winning score. New York’s aggressive defense forced four turnovers from Buffalo’s Josh Allen, including three interceptions by Jordan Whitehead, in a wild and often ugly season opener. While the Jets concluded their night with coach Robert Saleh joining a celebratory mob in the end zone, the injury to Rodgers cast a pall over their season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs signed Chris Jones to a new one-year contract Monday, which should end the All-Pro defensive tackle’s holdout. It also means he could be on the field against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2. Jones was entering the final year of a four-year, $80 million deal. He gave up a $500,000 workout bonus, was fined $50,000 each day for missing mandatory minicamp and all of training camp, and forfeited nearly $1.1 million in his first game check for holding out through Week 1. It’s unclear whether the provisions in his new deal will allow Jones to recoup the millions he already lost.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could have two missing All-Pros back on Sunday in Jacksonville. Tight end Travis Kelce is progressing from the knee injury he sustained last week that kept him out of the Chiefs' opener against Detroit, and defensive tackle Chris Jones signed a new one-year contract Monday that should end his holdout. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that he's planning to take it day by day with Kelce, who was sorely missed in the 21-20 loss to the Lions. The extra time for recovery by playing on Thursday night last week should help Kelce's chances. Jones had been seeking more money and the Chiefs granted it in some incentives without adding any additional years to his four-year, $80 million contract that is set to expire after the season.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby has apologized after his father-in-law, disgraced former Baylor coach Art Briles, was seen on the field with Lebby after Oklahoma’s 28-11 win over SMU on Saturday night. Baylor fired Briles in 2016 after an investigation concluded he and his staff took no action against players named in sexual assault allegations. The images of Briles decked out in Oklahoma gear on Owen Field drew backlash from Sooners fans on social media. Lebby said the issue will not come up again.

UNDATED (AP) — Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh created headlines when he went out of his way to encourage sharing with football players the billions of dollars conferences and schools make from selling the rights to their games to television networks. Harbaugh is far from alone in believing professional sports-style revenue-sharing, basically pay-for-play, is the next evolution of major college sports. Many college sports leader are hesitant about heading down that path, but there are those in and around the enterprise planning for it to happen.

UNDATED (AP) — Texas jumped to No. 4 in The Associated Press college football poll after beating Alabama and the Pac-12 became just the second conference to place as many as eight teams in an AP Top 25. Georgia received 55 first-place votes to remain the clear No. 1. Michigan is No. 2, with two-first place votes. No. 3 Florida State received three first-place votes and moved up a spot. Texas got two-first place votes. The Longhorns are in the top five for the first time since starting the 2010 season at No. 5 while Alabama dropped to No. 10.

CHICAGO (AP) — Monday night’s game between the Kansas City Royals and White Sox in Chicago was postponed due to rain. The teams will play a straight doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 3:40 p.m. CT. Kansas City right-hander Brady Singer will start against Chicago right-hander Dylan Cease in the opener. Royals righty Jordan Lyles will oppose White Sox righty Touki Toussaint in the nightcap.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Cedric Mullins hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-5 to begin a crucial homestand. The Orioles entered the day with a three-game lead over Tampa Bay atop the AL East, and they host the Rays for a four-game series after St. Louis leaves. Baltimore trailed 5-4 when Mullins hit a drive to right off reliever Andre Pallante, who had just replaced starter Dakota Hudson. The Orioles withstood a shaky outing from Dean Kremer, who allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings. D.L. Hall won in relief.

DENVER (AP) — Yan Gomes hit a two-run single in the ninth inning and Michael Fulmer stepped up at the very end, helping the Chicago Cubs top the Colorado Rockies 5-4 on Monday night. Gomes finished with three hits and three RBIs. Christopher Morel homered and Dansby Swanson had two hits for Chicago in the opener of a six-game trip. The Cubs stayed three games back of NL Central-leading Milwaukee and two games head of Arizona for the second NL wild card.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Sports betting company DraftKings has apologized after using the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks to entice people to bet on baseball and football games. The Boston-based company offered users a 9/11-themed promotion titled “Never Forget.” It required the Yankees, Mets and Jets to win their games Monday. That is the 22nd anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and the downing of a passenger jet in a field in Pennsylvania. The tragedy killed nearly 3,000 people. An outcry on social media from people offended by the promotion followed. DraftKings later took it down and apologized.

UNDATED (AP) — Suspended Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker says allegations of sexual harassment against him are completely false. He also says the intimate phone call he had with activist and rape survivor Brenda Tracy was consensual and outside the scope of Title IX and school policy. Tucker responded to Tracy's allegations in an 885-word response a day after he was suspended by Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller. Tucker is in the third year of a $95 million, 10-year contract. If he is fired for cause, the school won't have to pay him what’s remaining on his deal.
