Kindness continues to pay off for young students in Barton County. Kindergarteners are limited in the ways they can make a difference, but they can still be nice. Myles Hamit in Mrs. Westerhaus' class at Jefferson Elementary, was presented a giant $100 check as the last January weekly winner in Eagle Media's Make a Difference Contest, presented by OPI and Golden Belt Printing.
"I can make a difference by being nice to people even if they aren't my friend," Myles said.

All Barton County students, grades K-6, are eligible for the Make a Difference Contest, which will run for the duration of the 2025-26 school year. As a weekly winner, Myles and his teacher were eligible for the monthly prize. Eisenhower fifth grader Treacyn Williams claimed the January monthly prize of another $100 and a bookbag filled with swag from other contest sponsors. Treacyn's teacher, Miss Maneth, also won $100 in the monthly contest.
The Make a Difference contest, presented by OPI & Golden Belt Printing, is sponsored in part by Big Ben Custom Engraving, Freedom Claims Management, Great Bend Redi Mix, Francis Financial, Medical Park Pharmacy, R&R Roofing, Allstaff Chartered, Miller Plastics, Rosencrantz Bemis Water Well Service, Great Bend Rec, Jimlo Glass Center, Haz Mat Response, & Scooter's Coffee.
