Jennifer Bosley had every reason to take some time off. Diagnosed with Stage 2 Ovarian Cancer in March, however, the sixth-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary in Great Bend decided to keep working. For her dedication to the job, Bosley was selected as the October winner in Eagle Media's Nominate a School Hero Contest, presented by OPI & Golden Belt Printing.
"She had a little party with the kids in her classroom the last day of September to celebrate Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and her last round of chemo," said Bosley's nomination form. "The school was to wear teal to support her. Her students drew temporary tattoos on her head, they had cupcakes, and she received gifts from the class. She has made the best of it for them in this difficult time as well. She has kept them educated and very aware of what is going on with her cancer situation."
Tina Koochel with OPI & Golden Belt Printing presented Bosley with a $500 check during a brief ceremony at the school that included Bosley's sixth graders.
"For her to have the strength to go through what she’s going through physically, mentally and emotionally, then to come to school and be a rockstar teacher with her students daily, that is a true School Hero hands down," said Bosley's nomination. "She deserves recognition for all the hard work and dedication through this very difficult time in her life, but each and every day, she continues to have a smile on her face. She’s such a role model for her students daily."
The School Hero Contest is for any school employee who goes above and beyond in his or her job. Administrators, teachers, paras, coaches, maintenance staff, cafeteria workers, and more are all eligible. A new School Hero will be selected on the fourth Tuesday of each month, and that hero will be recognized with $500 in prize money.
