The learning curve continued for the Barton Community College wrestling team Saturday at the UNK Younes Hospitality Open held at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney, Nebraska.
Battling against two and four-year schools featuring some of the top NCAA Division II and NAIA programs, the 14-pack of Cougars produced an 11-28 overall record. Ethan Boles (141-division), Jarret Mader (149-division), Derek Truman (174-division), and Logan Buchanan (285-division) led the Barton entries each going 2-2 respectfully.
Wrapping up a busy November, Barton will take the next two weeks off before entering the final stretch of the fall semester at the annual Bob Smith Open held December 8 in Hays, Kansas and hosting of the Cougar Open on December 15th.
Receiving one of the five Cougar byes in the opening round, Buchanan took charge in the Barton lineup advancing into the championship quarterfinals with a pair of first period back flattening's before bouncing to the backside falling to Western Wyoming's Logan Buchanan and Jack Allen of Nebraska Kearney in the consolation round of six.
Landon Koelling (133-division) and Mader manufactured the other first round victories for the Cougars. Koelling scored his lone victory of the day picking up a first period fall over Brantley Odom of Fort Hays Tech Northwest's while Mader fashioned the first of his two tech falls with a 17-1 win over Colorado School of Mines Yahir Chairez-Salazar and later notching a 18-3 tech fall in the consolation round over Iowa Western's Justin Lee.
Bounced to the consolation side, Boles regrouped making a deep dive in the back side of the bracket stringing a pair of victories out, earning an 8-2 decision over Ayden Kelley of Briar Cliff Iowa and 4-2 result over Ku Chow of Adams State. Boles would bowout in the next round on a 16-1 tech fall to Colorado School of Mines Cole O'Brien.
In the 174-division, Truman matched Boles deep consolation run completing his day 2-2 earning both his victories on the backside behind first period falls. The freshman notched his first pin in 47-seconds over Everett Pack of Fort Hays Tech Northwest before needing 18-seconds longer in the victory over Bethany College's Angel Locust.
Picking up the Cougars other victories were Deryk Yott (157-division) and Nathan Agudzi-Addo (285-divisoin) each going 1-2 on the day.
Competing unattached, Ellinwood sophomore Matthew Cook (149-division) and Hutchinson sophomore Keenon Gonzales-Brown (184-division) each earned a victory to finish their days 1-2 respectfully.
