USD 428 Food Service is preparing to serve area children again this summer through the district’s Free Summer Meals Program, offering nutritious meals at no cost to all children ages 1 through 18.

The program begins Tuesday, May 26, and will provide grab-and-go lunches and breakfast packs Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at participating elementary schools.

Meals will be served at Eisenhower, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Riley Elementary Schools from May 26 through June 26. Beginning June 29 through July 24, meals will continue at Eisenhower, Jefferson, and Riley Elementary Schools. There will be no meals served on Friday, July 3.

USD 428 Food Service will host open permit pickup days May 18-21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Central Kitchen, located at 625 East 10th Street. Parents or guardians must bring all children in their household when picking up permits. Families who are unable to attend during open pickup may still obtain permits beginning May 26 at their selected school location.

Meal permits are required per state guidelines and must be presented daily at meal pickup. Permits are school-specific and may only be used at the location selected during signup.

“These meals are available free of charge to all children ages 1 to 18, regardless of income,” said Kristy Alvord, USD 428 Food Service director. “We encourage families to take advantage of this convenient and nutritious opportunity throughout the summer.”

This program is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service. Additional information regarding permit requirements, adult meal pricing, and summer meal procedures is available at GreatBendSchoolMeals.com or by calling the USD 428 Central Kitchen at 620-793-1540.
