No football team is the same in week 1 as they are when the season ends. Every team grows and changes as the season evolves to best fit who they are at that point in the season. In Hoisington, back-to-back losses in weeks 2 and 3 prompted a shift in focus for head coach Zach Baird and the team.
He says last week against Nickerson, that focus showed in the physicality the team played with, and the way the players prioritized staying healthy when off the field. Usually he lets the position coaches run group meetings, but this past week, he wanted to give credit to certain individuals who are stepping up their performance.
"I sat with those guys in meetings Sunday night. Usually when I sit in meetings, it's because there's something that drastically needs to get better. That one was different, and I told them that. I sat it there specifically just to wait until the end of the meeting and tell them, I'm proud of the progress they're making. I think the whole room is doing a great job for us. Obviously we need them to continue to get better, but really, really proud of the way they've played and the progress they've made.
"The one thing I really like about our guys is, it's important to them. They spend time outside of when we have them trying to get their bodies as healthy as possible. If we can continue to do that moving forward, I think that's a good thing for us."
