MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Michael Pratt overcame two costly interceptions with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tyrick James with 4:27 left and Tulane upset Kansas State 17-10. K-State came into the game favored by two touchdowns. The Green Wave stopped the Wildcats on fourth-and-short twice in the third quarter and again in the fourth. K-State finished 1 for 5 on fourth down. It was Tulane’s first road victory over a Power-5 conference school since beating Rutgers in 2010. Rutgers was part of the Big East that season.
HOUSTON (AP) — Jalon Daniels threw for 158 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 123 yards and two scores as Kansas improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2009 with a 48-30 win over Houston. Daniels finished 14 of 23 and threw touchdown passes of 5, 60 and 8 yards and had touchdown runs of 12 and 9 yards. He found 11 different receivers and threw touchdown passes to Torry Locklin, Jared Casey and Luke Grimm.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Dillon Gabriel threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and sixth-ranked Oklahoma hammered Nebraska 49-14 in the Cornhuskers’ first game following the firing of Scott Frost. OU posted its most lopsided victory over Nebraska since a 45-10 win in 1990. The Sooners have won seven of eight against the team it used to battle for conference championships year-in and year-out in the old Big Eight. The Huskers have lost 19 straight against Top 25 opponents and nine in a row against Bowl Subdivision teams. Oklahoma scored 35 straight points after Nebraska opened with a six-play, 77-yard touchdown drive.
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Spencer Sanders threw four touchdown passes in just over one quarter of action, and No. 8 Oklahoma State rolled past Arkansas-Pine Bluff 63-7. Sanders matched his career high for touchdown passes in a game in the game’s first 16 minutes. He completed 13 of 16 passes for 242 yards for the Cowboys in their final non-conference game before entering Big 12 play. Braydon Johnson caught two touchdown passes as the Cowboys gained 538 total yards. Skyler Perry threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Raequan Prince for Pine Bluff’s only touchdown. The Golden Lions managed just 13 first downs.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Aydan White returned one of his two interceptions for an 84-yard touchdown to lead a strong defensive effort that carried No. 16 North Carolina State past Texas Tech 27-14 on Saturday night. Texas Tech came in as the Bowl Subdivision's top passing offense. But N.C. State's veteran defense frequently harassed quarterback Donovan Smith and shut down any ground game the Red Raiders tried to muster. Demie Sumo-Karngbaye scored two touchdowns as the Wolfpack improved to 3-0. Smith ran and threw for scores to lead the Red Raiders, who were off to a 2-0 start under first-year coach Joey McGuire.
WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor quarterback Blake Shapen threw for a touchdown and scored on a fourth-down run as the 17th-ranked Bears beat Texas State 42-7. True freshman Richard Reese ran for 156 yards and three touchdowns for Baylor. Shapen had the game-turning play just before halftime when he faked a handoff to Reese and took off untouched for a 35-yard touchdown. That gave the Bears a 21-7 lead right after the Bobcats had gotten within a score. Texas State is 0-10 against Top 25 teams since becoming an FBS team in 2012.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Tony Mathis rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns, CJ Donaldson ran for 101 yards and three scores, and West Virginia breezed to a 65-7 victory over Towson on Saturday. On a day when West Virginia held a ceremony to honor some of its greatest offensive players, the Mountaineers put together their best showing in a year, although it didn’t quite make up for opening the season with close losses to No. 23 Pittsburgh and Kansas. West Virginia piled up 624 yards of offense, scored touchdowns on six of its seven first-half possessions and led its Championship Subdivision opponent 45-7 at halftime.
SEATTLE (AP) — Michael Penix Jr. threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns and Washington emphatically stated its case as a contender in the Pac-12 with a 39-28 win over No. 11 Michigan State. Penix was spectacular for three quarters in a primetime national showcase that showed Kalen DeBoer’s rebuild is progressing faster than expected. Washington led 29-8 at halftime. Penix completed 24 of 40 passes. Payton Thorne threw for 323 yards and three TDs, and led a pair of quick fourth-quarter scoring drives for Michigan State that caused some nerves for the Huskies. But the rally was too late for the Spartans.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Stetson Bennett went 16 for 23 for 284 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead No. 1 Georgia to a 48-7 victory over South Carolina. The Bulldogs' defense nearly had its second shutout of the season before South Carolina scored a touchdown against the backups with 53 seconds to go. The Georgia offense scored on eight of its first nine drives, gaining 547 yards and averaging nearly 10 yards a play in its Southeastern Conference opener before putting in the backups in the fourth quarter. South Carolina started 0-2 in the SEC for the fourth straight year.
BOSTON (AP) — Brady Singer pitched out of a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the third and finished with six strong innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 9-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Singer won his fifth straight decision. He allowed five singles and a walk while striking out five. It was the second straight start without allowing a run for the 26-year-old College World Series champion from Florida. MJ Melendez and Vinnie Pasquantino had three hits apiece for the Royals. Rich Hill took the loss for Boston.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina hit a two-run drive while Albert Pujols went hitless in his quest for 700 homers, and the St. Louis Cardinals swept a doubleheader from the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 and 1-0 in 11 innings. Pujols started at first base in the opener and hit second for the first time this season. He went 0 for 3 with two walks in his first two plate appearances. The sold-out crowd of 46,678 loudly booed both walks. He pinch hit and struck out in the second game.
BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Chris Buescher closed out a bizarre first round of NASCAR’s playoffs in which none of the title contenders won a race by becoming the 19th winner this season with his victory Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. The second win of Buescher’s career marked the first time in this format of NASCAR’s postseason that a playoff driver failed to win a race during a round. Erik Jones won the opener and Bubba Wallace won last week. The 16-driver field was cut by four, and eliminated from the playoffs were Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and RCR teammates Austin Dillon and Tyler Reddick.
