Thirty-four outstanding students across Great Bend Public Schools were recognized for outstanding school attendance with a brand-new bicycle through the district’s Perfect Attendance Bike Program. Now in its 15th year, the program recognizes elementary and preschool students who achieve perfect attendance throughout the school year.

This year, six bicycles were awarded at each of the district’s five elementary schools, with four additional bicycles presented to students at Little Panthers Preschool. Assemblies were held across the district to celebrate the students’ commitment in front of classmates, families, and staff.

ā€œI look forward to these assemblies every year because it’s such a fun way to celebrate our students,ā€ said Karen Shaner, program organizer. ā€œSeeing their excitement never gets old. This program has always been about encouraging kids to show up, do their best, and be proud of their hard work all year long. We’re so thankful for the families and community members who continue to support it year after year.ā€

The effort is led by Shaner and fellow volunteer Jane Isern, with generous support from local businesses and organizations. Walmart has remained a longtime partner of the program, assisting with financial contributions as well as bike assembly and storage.

ā€œThis program is a great example of a community coming together to encourage student success,ā€ said Superintendent Khris Thexton. ā€œEvery school day provides opportunities for learning, growth, and connection. We appreciate the families, volunteers, and community partners who help reinforce the importance of being present and engaged every day.ā€

The Pilot Club of Great Bend also contributed by providing a properly fitted bike helmet to each recipient, reinforcing the organization’s mission to promote brain safety and health.
