National 4-H Week will be October 4 – 10th with the theme, “Opportunity For All.”

Michelle Beran, Cottonwood Extension Agent for Barton County along with several 4-Hers, addressed the Barton County Commissioners proposing the Proclamation.

The goal is to encourage all citizens to recognize 4-H for the significant impact it makes by empowering youth with the skills they will need to lead for their lifetime in over 33 specific areas including nutrition, photography, food, entomology, agriculture, and community service.

4-H member Hailey Hicks explained that each year, 4-H clubs across Kansas participate in an activity called “48 Hours In 4-H.”

"This year, members of the 11 4-H clubs in Barton County will be meeting at the old 4-H buildings between Hoisington and Great Bend and spend several hours cleaning the grounds and buildings under the direction of the 4-H Building Board. These buildings are used for club meetings, shooting-sports practices, and are available to rent to the public.”

A BBQ Fundraiser will be held on October 11th with a drive-thru format from 11am to 1pm at the old 4-H grounds. The menu includes BBQ beef or pork, beans, and coleslaw at $8 per plate. Proceeds will go towards event scholarships and learning activities for youth in Barton County.

There are over 11 individual 4-H clubs in the Cottonwood District within Barton County with over 200 members. To become a member of 4-H, contact the Barton County Extension Office.
