Sometimes a good idea just needs a revamp. When Christina Hayes was hired 12 years ago, select Great Bend retailers participated in the Icy Sidewalk Sale. Figuring no one likes icy sidewalks, a high school marketing class rebranded the event as the Cabin Fever Reliever Sale. That, too, needed some work. Starting Saturday, Hayes and local participating retailers are proud to be a part of the Winter Big Bag Sale.

"All the participating stores, we have special bags printed up," Hayes said. "The 14th through the 21st, you can go shop in any of the participating stores, get a bag, and each store has its own rules."

For example, one store might offer 20 percent off any items that fill a bag. Another store, with items too large for a bag, might have its own version of the sale. The only rule is that participating retailers get to make their own rules to help clear winter inventory to make room for spring. The reusable canvas bags are for the customer to keep.

"You'll want to make sure to get your hands on one of the limited edition bags because it will never be like that again," Hayes said. "It will be a little different each year. We're just going to see how it goes."

The bags will feature a logo for this year's sale on one side, and logos for each participating business on the other. The bags were printed and paid for as part of the city's economic development.
