Sara Hayden calls the first few week on the job as president of Great Bend Economic Development an absolute whirlwind of information and introductions. Hayden began her new job on August 3rd as she took over the position from Jessica Milsap who resigned to pursue another career. Hayden says the first month on the job has included meeting as many people as possible to promote collaboration and communication. She also sought mentorship outside of Great Bend to glean different perspectives and found mentors at Finney County Economic Development and Great Plains Development.
She says moving forward, she will continue to utilize Barton Community College as an important tool in both recruiting new businesses to the city and helping existing businesses to have access to the trained work force that they need.
“The cool thing about Barton is that they are so open to being flexible in offering what our workforce really needs, and always taking advice from business owners to what they will be able to offer,” Hayden said. “I think that we have truly the best when it comes to education right in our own backyard and that is exciting when it comes to bringing new business to the area.”
Hayden feels that gathering information from many resources is vital to setting the stage for Great Bend’s future. She feels the city, county, workforce, chamber of commerce and other components are ready to collaborate to see Great Bend realize its potential.
“I think our biggest strength as a community is that everyone is so passionate about this city and which way it is going to go,” said Hayden. “It's been exciting to work with the city, work with the chamber, the county and all the entities to collaborate and determine what direction we can all move together in.”
Hayden feels it's important to mention that economic development is so much more than seeking new businesses. While recruitment is always part of the mission, the current goal is helping existing businesses realize their potential to expand and add jobs, while seeking ways for local citizens to create new ventures.
