Each of the five Barton County Commissioners has her or her own specialty. For Barb Esfeld, that often entails trips to Topeka to keep tabs on the state legislature. On Friday, Esfeld filed for re-election for the District 2 spot on the commission that covers much of central and eastern Great Bend.

"I am running again to continue with legislative work to help the county and with property tax reduction, and to continue with everything we started," she said. "That first four years, part of the first two I feel like was such a learning time. As the new commissioners were elected, we all work so well together that we've got a lot of plans to make Barton County a better place to live."

Esfeld served as Barton County Appraiser for 13 years. She began her fourth year on the commission in January, and was appointed as the commission chairwoman in the first meeting of 2024.

The 2024 primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6. The winners of the primary election will advance to the general election held on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
