Half a million minutes is a lot of reading. Then again, the good things in life rarely come easy. Readers in the Great Bend Public Library’s Summer Reading Program had until Saturday to turn in reading minutes with a chance to “unearth a party.” Though that goal was not met, the library will still host its Summer Wrap Up for readers of all ages this Friday, July 24.

Library staff said the goal of 500,000 collective reading minutes as not met, but the 338,000 minutes turned in was still impressive. To celebrate, throughout the day on Friday, the library will offer a popcorn bar and prize drawings for children. Icy pops and other refreshments will also be available throughout the day.

Because so many children’s milestone prizes remain, the library is extending the deadline to turn in children’s reading logs through closing time Thursday, July 23. Adults and teens still have until July 31 to turn in minutes. Each hour logged is worth an entry ticket for one of several prizes.
